11/20/12
Well, our big handsome boy has survived his best buddy being adopted, so now he can focus on his girlfriend Stephie. They are quite the pair! Rio does so well with other dogs; it is amazing. He likes for everyone to get along, and is a bit of a gentle giant when it comes to dogs. Sadly, he is not so social with people he does not know. He is very protective of his human, but is very cautious of people he does not know. He would not do well in a home with a lot of people coming and going, but better with just his "pack," be it two or four legged. Rio is extremely gentle with those he knows and loves, and will flourish in the proper home.
7/28/12 Update
We have discovered that Rio is somewhat cautious when meeting new people, and is protective of his master, until he is sure new people are ok. Dogs are fine; he seems to like all of them. He and his best friend Wolf, who came from the same kill shelter, are great buddies, and Rio is fine letting Wolf be the boss, but does try to initiate play.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog. The dog's age and weight are estimates, and statements about the health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, are estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different than those of our volunteers.
