Maverick is an extremely stunning GSD with a personality to match!! He is a typical energetic adolescent who is busy and interested in all the things. Maverick is proving to be very intuitive and is a very quick study. Typically, he only has to be told “No” one time. He already knows the following commands: Sit, Lay Down, Crate, Drop it, Out, and Let’s Go. Maverick has not tried to get on any furniture, so we are keeping it that way in case his future adopter prefers not to have dogs on their couch or bed. He sleeps in his own bed at night and is only crated when left alone in the house. He does very well in his crate. Maverick behaves perfectly for bath time and stands very still for you as he gets bathed.
Maverick is super friendly towards all people and animals and is great to take out in public. He gets along with other dogs of all sizes - loves to play and be up in the mix! He listens to social cues and body language from other dogs very well. He loves, loves, loves playing with toys! Maverick also enjoys car rides and likes sticking his head out the window from the backseat.
He can still be mouthy when he gets attention (because it's his favorite thing!! Who doesn’t love pets?!), but is receiving positive reinforcement training for that behavior. He does love to show affection by licking and gives the tiniest kisses on your toes.
Maverick sits without being told to have his leash put on and walks well on a leash. He is learning to walk at the hip, rather than zig-zag in front of you. He does pull when he spies moving squirrels or cats. He is not leash reactive. Maverick loves the water and will willingly go for a dip in the river to cool off. He is a great dog to take with you for any and all outdoor activities!
He is the only dog in his foster home, so he is getting about 2 hours of active play or stimulation each day, whether that is in the form of a walk, playing at the dog park, swimming, playing fetch in the yard or going out in public (patios, pet stores, etc). Maverick usually gets exercised in the morning and again in the evening. He will need this level of activity for at least another year to keep him from getting into trouble from being bored. If he is lucky enough to be adopted into a home with another younger dog to play with, the exercise commitment for him should be less. As he ages and matures, his exercise requirements should level out, but currently, he needs to have his intelligent mind stimulated and absorb as many experiences as possible to be set up for success in the home. Maverick would be a great family dog, addition to a pack or adventurous companion.
Don’t let his location deter you from meeting him - his foster mom goes to Austin regularly and is more than willing to travel and do what it takes to find his forever home!
Maverick is ordinary in his temporary imperfections, but extraordinary in his attributes. It will take very little work to make him into the dog you want him to be and no other will be as willing to please and eager to love as Maverick.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog. The dog's age and weight are estimates, and statements about the health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, are estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different than those of our volunteers.
