10-4-2010 Update
Well, if my friends could see me now! I'm fully furred, getting slightly plump, and I have a new love in my life! I have discovered how to play! I have my very own blue Kong toy, and I love chasing it (not so big on giving it back to you though, I like to play "keep away" too!). I love carrying it around in my mouth, and tossing me head around with it! Playing is very cool! Guess I had been so worried about food, fleas, and shelter for the last couple of years, I sort of forgot that dogs PLAY! Well, no more! I remember, and I love it! Now that I'm fully furred and plump, I'm very happy to turn my attention to other things, like looking cute (check out my new pics, I'm beautiful with my new fur!), loving my mom and dad, playing, watching my resident brother and sister play and prance. Life is good. Wouldn't you like me to come and share your life, and show you how to play??!! I have a warm and furry heart too, and I'm ready to share it with someone "FURever"!
7/2/2010 Update
Since we never really got around to "officially" changing it, and it's now on her vet records, we've decided to keep Lucky's name. Lucky it is, and lucky she is! She's such a pleasant dog, and now that her skin is healing she is becoming quite comfortable and wants to be a part of things. She's doing very well, gaining weight, becoming very interactive with her people and the other dogs. She still gets jealous when anyone else wants attention, and still barks to let us know when someone is coming up the walk or into the driveway. She's not a "spring chicken", but this feisty girl has a lot of life and love and excitement in her. She loves to be involved, to be near her people, and she really, really likes eating! She will thrive in a home of her own, and would be an ideal companion for someone who wants a companion to watch TV, cook special meals, stroll around the yard or neighborhood, and spend lots of quality time together with their pet. Can you make Lucky a "lucky dog" again, and give her a happy forever home? Get your application in, Lucky is a very deserving and sweet gal.
6/20/2010 Update
Well, little Miss Lucky's skin scrape was negative, no mange. She's just dealing with a horrible case of flea allergies from her infestation over the last couple of years. Now that she's been flea-free since arriving at AGSDR, she will recover well. She is also Heartworm Negative, and is putting on some weight. The vet gave us some antibiotic drops for her ears, and a cortisone shot for her skin. We think she'll heal well, and be ready for her forever home in a few weeks.
She's also showing her personality a LOT more than she did when she arrived. Now that she's feeling better, she's acting more like a German Shepherd dog! She's happy and energetic, she loves to be the first one out the door, but turns around right away to make sure you're coming too! She loves being with her person! She's lovey, happy, and adores getting pats and treats. She does not like being outside alone, and does not like staying out too long in the heat, even with her person. The heat seems to make her skin more uncomfortable.
She's showing a little jealousy when the other dogs get any attention. She has been so starved for love, attention, food, and care, that she wants it ALL now, and doesn't want to share! As well, she can get a little snarly when the foster male constantly harasses her and tries to mount her. She's not having any of that! To be fair, he IS a bit of a pill. She has never gotten snarly with a person, she just doesn't like to be continuously "courted" by a big male she hardly knows! She looks at us like "Can't you DO something with him??"! (We did, we neutered him, but he's still a little full of himself!) So, we think Lucky is coming along fine, and she is healing well. We expect her to be ready for adoption at the end of June.
6/11/2010 Update
Lucky is improving by leaps and bounds! Amazing what a couple of weeks of medication, good food, air conditioning and love can do for a dog. Lucky is definitely coming out of her shell. She is ALL personality! She sees everything, responds to everything, and nothing gets past her! If another dog gets so much as a pat, she's right there making sure she gets some attention too! She alerts when anyone gets near the house, but it's not an aggression issue, it's like a perimeter alarm system!
She's showing some protection of her food bowl now when other dogs are around (who could blame her, she was awfully thin!), and we're working through that. She's learning how to play with a toy, and how to sit. Her skin is still painful and itchy, and she doesn't like anyone touching her tail yet, but the open sores are healing, and she's coming along well. She let us clip her claws again, and likes to lean on her people for a nice ear rub.
For a sick girl, she sure is happy and active! She's going to spend two days with the vet next week, and we hope that will get her even further down the road towards becoming healthy again! We think she might be a little younger than first guess, but as always with foster dogs, we just can't be sure. Keep your eye on Lucky, she's going to heal and become a wonderful companion for some "lucky" person!
6/1/10
Lucky is new to rescue, and is in need of time to heal. She will be very adoptable when she has had time and medication to address her skin conditions. She is sweet, personable, and sociable. It is obvious from her good temperament that she has had positive interaction with people and animals. She's calm, hasn't shown food aggression despite being underweight, and has shown no dog aggression towards the resident dogs. She's just sad and uncomfortable right now, and wants to find a quiet, cool place to snooze and recover.
Her eyes are very expressive, and she obviously appreciates kindness, good food, and attention. She only minimally objects when pills are stuffed down her throat, and she suffered through a bath (perhaps her first ever) and claw-clip with very little struggle. Her foster family liked her immediately, and was really impressed with her mental and physical resilience and good temperament, despite her obvious physical discomfort.
This is a dog that won't need or want a tremendous amount of exercise or training. She's more of a "sleep by your chair while you watch TV" and "what's for dinner" kind of girl. There is no ball-drive or high-energy tension here. When she has healed, she will be an extraordinary pet for someone looking for quiet and low-maintenance GSD companionship.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog.
