“Now you know you're a cute little heartbreaker...” Jimi Hendrix most definitely wrote those lyrics for our Foxy Flute! This little lady exudes fox vibes - from her delicate and petite features to her fluffy tail and quirky little personality.
Flute is just too cute and every time she is out in public, she gets comments from people on how beautiful she is! She loves chin scritches, which is a win-win because the hair around her neck is luxuriously thick and soft. Water is not a threat to this pocket-sized pup - Flute will wade right in to cool off and get a drink. When she is excited, Flute does a little tap dance for you and boy does she have more things to get excited about these days - especially walks and outings. She’s great at matching energy - she does fine going for a 30 minute walk or a 3 hour walk. As much as Flute enjoys being your walking/hiking/errand running/patio drinking buddy, she is rather cat-like in the house and would actually do well in an apartment or more urban dwelling. She has very impeccable house manners and does terrific when left alone, loose in the house, but is also crate trained. She is very quiet and lowkey in the house, but when she does get the urge to play with some toys, exhibits independent play - she will toss the ball for herself and bat it around. Speaking of independent, Flute is not a very needy shepherd. She by no means refuses attention if you give it to her, but also doesn’t seek it out as much as most other shepherds tend to do. Flute is not allowed on any furniture in her current foster home as it is a much harder habit to break than it is to make! She has multiple dog beds that she lounges in; one in particular is definitely her “safe space” that she spends the majority of her time in. Flute prefers to make the first move when meeting new people. Once she’s had a chance to approach someone when she feels ready and give them a proper sniff test, it’s almost always followed by some gentle kisses. She would not be recommended to be in a household with small children.
Flute is extremely intelligent and masters new skills in minutes. Working on obedience skills has proven to really boost her confidence and she is so easy to train. She also loves activities like snuffle and lick mats and food dispensing puzzles.
Flute is the only dog in her current foster home, but does attend doggy daycare to help her expand on her social skills and build up confidence. Previously, she did live with a couple resident dogs and this is what her former foster said about her experience with Flute living with other dogs:
With her canine friends, her play style can be a little rough and rumble. She’s known to challenge the pack hierarchy, perhaps because she’s looking for her permanent place in the world. For this reason, we think she would settle best in a home with no other dogs, or with submissive dogs who don’t mind her German-style Napoleon complex.
Flute has been with her current foster for a little over 3 months and her foster mom has learned quite a bit during that time, decoding just who she really is and what she needs. At first, she was quite the puzzle, as she exhibited some behaviors that seemed to be stubborn and a bit frustrating, but now are understood to be coming from a place of fear. Initially, Flute was very nervous and skittish in her new environment and she needs more time than most other dogs to adjust. Flute is very respectful of boundaries and rules, which she needs as it seems to help ease her nervousness. She definitely has held onto some trauma from her past that she is not going to forget and will need a leader who is patient, calm and provides structure and love so that she will feel safe. Flute’s foster has gained the help and support of a local trainer, Sandy Wittliff of k9 Mutt Training. Sandy has been a wonderful resource in figuring out how best to listen to what Flute is saying through her behavior and has dedicated herself to continuing to be a resource for whomever is fortunate enough to adopt Flute into their family. Flute comes with a very strong support system, dedicated to seeing her succeed! She is an incredibly sweet girl, ready to provide an extremely rewarding bond with the right person.

NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog.
