Fiona came into our foster world on Sept 26th - one day before a scheduled EU. Not on our watch!! Never have I had an easier introduction with my pack (3 grown german shepherds) than with this precious girl. She is such an easy-going, happy lady.
Let's get the bad news out of the way. Our girl is HW+, but is starting treatment in December. She's also a little heavy for her frame. Her previous neglect included being overfed and not exercised. She's got about 10# to go to be in ideal shape, but this will be a slow process while we heal her from the heart worms. Food is her motivator - which is a blessing and a curse: need to give her meds? no problem? stick it in a slice of turkey and it's gone! she will - with the same vigor - eat her dinner or grab something out of your hand.
Otherwise, she is chill, itself. No drama with this dog. She is house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and great in the car. She might need a little boost to get in the back seat, but she is shaping up nicely and becoming more independent. She loves the park and is a fabulous pack member. Her human is her best friend, so she is great at following commands and following the herd. When inside, she is fascinated by my two cats. They perch on top of the dog crate and tease her mercilessly. But I have a barrier to separate everyone, so I don't know how she would respond to them in the same space without supervision.
She wants to be by her person - are you in the bathroom? are you working? are you in the yard? She'll follow you just to make sure. She sleeps on the floor next to my bed, and occasionally I'll find her with my senior girl. She is well-mannered in public and private.
Fiona's estimated age at the shelter was 8yo, but the vet checked her out and calculated around 6yo. She has a lot more time for life and love and fun! Sweet Fiona will bring a lot of happiness as a solo dog or part of a puppy pack.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog. The dog's age and weight are estimates, and statements about the health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, are estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different than those of our volunteers.
