Hi everyone, I'm Chauncey! Thanks for reading my biography. My foster Mom says this is how you'll get to know all about me and decide if i'm the special guy for your family. I told her I'm a special guy for ANY family but she said I should still introduce myself, so here goes!
I came in as a tough case because I had demodex (a type of mange that is NOT contagious), ear infections, skin infections, and was 20 pounds underweight. My previous owners did not take care of me at all. Mom says it was straight-up neglect and it's a good thing she doesn't know where they live! I had big patches of my fur missing, and needed a lot of medicine and TLC. After a month with the rescue group I look 100% better though! I have all my fur back, my ears are pretty, and Mom calls me her "little brick" now that I have some weight on me. I do think I'm a handsome fellow, and no one has disagreed with me yet.
I've been learning about all sort of things at my foster home. I have other German Shepherds I play with and it's the best- we run and chase and wrestle and have the BEST time. I love to steal their toys and hide them. Sometimes I growl if they try to steal them back but they ignore me and do it anyway! I was shy when i first got here because i didn't know if I was going to be hit or pet every time new Momma came close to me, but now I know it's all love and I'm a very happy and bouncy puppy! So anyway, I really want my own home and i'm hoping one of you guys out there is the perfect human for me!
Note from Foster Mom: Hi everyone, Chauncey seems to have had a rough first year of life. He was certainly neglected and potentially abused. Despite that he has been an amazing pup. I've really put him through the wringer with several daily medications and medicated baths and he has tolerated it all like a champ. Initially very skittish and trying to dodge me I would have to pin him down and pry his jaws open to medicate him. He never even showed the tiniest bit of aggression towards me during this which says a lot about his doggy character. After a few days he learned that the meds were coming one way or another and he stopped dodging and would sit down patiently while I administered them--it was so amazing to see the change in him! He has a healthy appetite and has quickly gained weight. He's down to medicated baths once or twice a week for a few more weeks but has otherwise returned to good health. He had no training in his previous life so we're starting from scratch with the basics: sit, stay, down and of course, shake hands. Chauncey is very eager to please and a smart boy so he learns things fast. He's not only crate trained but has now learned that when I take my purse to the door that means it's time for his crate so he just goes in automatically and sits down--so smart! Chauncey is on the smaller size for a male GSD. He's a bit shorter than most we see today. I know there are a large number of GSD fans who prefer the more petite size because it makes the dog easier to handle and also because it's truer to the original standard Max Von Stephanitz created for this wonderful breed. His coloring is a beautiful black and dark red, and his face has a fluffy halo of fur on it that makes him look like a little bear. Chauncey is going to make some family a great companion, and i'm so pleased I get to be a part of his transition to a better and happier life!
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
