Do you like tall, dark, and handsome? Soulful eyes and perpetual snuggling? Then you should definitely get to know Hans! Hans has been a pleasure to foster. He is so very loving and bonded quickly to me, and yet still behaves affectionately towards friends that come to visit. He is appropriately intrigued and cautious with strangers, and quickly takes cues from me about whether someone is a friend and should immediately be loved on. Over his first week here he has gone from whining in his crate at bedtime to going in on his own and immediately settling down. He still feels some separation anxiety and will howl for 5 minutes when I leave for work (as heard by me standing near the door and observing) but has not been destructive, or had any accidents in his crate. At this point I would say he is housebroken. Hans had one accident in his first day here but has since then been perfect. He is allowed to stay loose whenever I am home, and spends most of his time playing with the resident puppy (also the same age as him), playing with a toy quietly at my feet, or laying with his head in my lap for maximum cuddle time. It was clear when he arrived that no one had ever shown him toys to play with or given him much attention. Hans has really blossomed, and now knows how to retrieve a ball! Okay, Maybe only 70% of the time, but that's pretty good for less than a week! He's also learning training commands very quickly with food treats. He learned "sit" within 4 tries! We are working on leash training next, but what is most clear is that Hans is very very eager to please his human. He is highly trainable, extremely affectionate, smart, and really a joy to have around. He's been around children in the 7 to 12 year range, and of course the resident dog, and played nicely with everyone so far.
Hans came to us very undernourished- only 35 pounds originally. However, he has gained weight very quickly, his coat looks terrific, and he'll be ready to adopt mid-November after he is neutered. I would really like a home for Hans where the person or family has time to spend with light training, walks, ball time, and lots of time to just sit and be affectionate.
Message from Hans: Hello humans!!! I love love love my foster Momma! I am secretly hoping no one wants to adopt me so I can stay here FOREVER. But- foster Momma says that's a no-no, and the faster I get to my forever home, the happier I will be. I'm kind of sad I've been bounced around a bit, from the streets to the shelter, then to a kennel (with nice people), and now a foster home, but I really like it here, and I want a family of my very own now. I live with a very obnoxious big fuzzy GSD puppy supposedly my age but twice as annoying as me- really. Momma lets me snuggle with her on the floor while she works on her laptop ( I have no idea what that is, only that I'm not allowed to lick it). I still don't know why I'm not allowed on the couch or the bed, but I deal with it. Her neighbors and friends come over all the time to play with me!! I get to show off my ball-fetching style, and always give them lots of cuddles when we are inside. Momma says I am in the "all legs" phase of growing so sometimes I look funny and crash when I'm running after stuff or playing tag with my sister, but I don't care- I still love it! Everyone says I am really beautiful, but I'm trying not to let it go to my head. Mostly, I just want someone to love me, so the next 12 years of my life will be better than the first one. Won't you come visit?
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
