This is Charlie. This beautiful GSD is very smart and seems to understand everything. She is currently able to do all the basics; sit, stay, down. But she also will fetch her ball when asked, will sit by the back door to go out and even knock at the doorknob with her nose if you ignore her. She will fetch her ball or sticks and bring them back to you, but doesn't always give them back right away. She seems to think it is fun to make her foster family fetch her after she has fetched the ball! She is also crate trained and will go in her crate with a simple command.
She is great with kids as she has two young boys that live with her and she just adores them. These boys have pretended she was a horse, dressed her up, rubbed her belly, pulled her tail, wrestled with her and chased her. She just plays right along. Even when friends of the boys come over, she is very pleasant and kind. Charlie is very protective of her family. She will bark loudly when a stranger comes to the door and needs a little time to adjust to new adults in the house. But, given a few moments to get used to the new smells, Charlie is fine. This protectiveness seems to only be an issue at home. When Charlie is in public, she does not bark at other people or animals. She does, however, want to play and sniff. She obeys the leash well, but could use a little more training.
As far as cats go, Charlie does find it hard to ignore them. The two older cats that she is living with are always a distraction for her. While her intent seems to be playful, it may be best to not have cats or other small animals around with Charlie. Kids and medium to large dogs seem to be just fine as she is very friendly and confident with most other animals. There is a lot of love in Charlie and she is anxious to give it to her forever family. She is still eager to learn and always willing to listen. She is also still gaining a little weight, but at 75 pounds, she is almost there. Anxious to love, eager to learn, Charlie is ready for a home.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
